Best of Both Worlds
I’ve never hidden the fact that I loved my job, the job I left, you know, not the mummy-kind! The kind where I have a name, where I take control and make decisions that actually are seen through and the kind where you get a lunch break and are not forced to share your lunch! So yes, my fashion pr job – that’s the job I loved. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Fin and Imogen, more than adore probably, and I adore looking after them, watching them grow, and being a mummy (and I consider myself so lucky that I am in a position that I can be a stay at home mummy) but when an opportunity came up to return to the realms of fashion again – I grabbed it!
It sounded too good to be true, 2 and half days back in the office (working on all things fabulous and fashion!) and the rest of the week being a mummy! I also had a great big slice of luck when my aunt and neighbour said they would share the childcare, this meaning Fin could still go to his pre-school and I could relax, safe in the knowledge that they would be totally comfortable with their surroundings. Although excited to start my new adventure, I was apprehensive. Would I be able to get myself dressed (in something a bit more respectable than skinny jeans and trainers?), make-up on, hair done and both kids out of the door by 7.30? Would I remember how to turn the computer on? Would I be able to cope with the work/life juggle? And was it realistically possible for me to have the best of both worlds?
A month or so in, and thankfully, I am able to leave the house in a respectable state – the kids not so respectable – they normally get dropped off still in their pyjamas! They love it though; 1, they think they are going on an adventure in their PJ’s, 2, they love the ‘I’m getting dressed’ game with someone other than me, and 3, (and the main reason) they get to choose their little variety pack of breakfast cereal (normally only purchased for holidays and special occasions!).
We have had some moments of course; you know those ridiculous situations that I often find myself in, like living in a (near-on) building site when I actually started my working adventure and trying to make all the builders cups of teas and coffees before I left whilst Fin tries to ‘help’ the builders with their work! Or like the mornings when we are just about to walk out the door and Fin decides he wants to copy his Daddy and soaks his hair over the bathroom sink! Or when I asked Fin to select a few choice toys for the day ahead and I turn my back for 2 minutes and he’s piled up virtually every toy and piece of scrap he could find (including 2 pairs of sunglasses, 1 shoe, a tea towel and an empty DVD case)!!
Despite all of the craziness and running around though, I am enjoying my work/life balance, I think (or rather, I hope) that the kids have realised that I am at home more than I am away at work and I consider myself really fortunate that I have found a mix. I mustn’t forget though, I owe an awful lot to my 2 amazing childminders – they make the kids smile (not to mention breakfast, lunch and dinner) and therefore allow me to really have the ‘best of both worlds’!
