Day 2: Anything Goes
First off: hat’s off to Mr. Sunshine! It’s making all the difference. This glorious weather allows us to cover the whole fashion gamut, from the lightest summer dresses and lace, to leather and fur. Such creative contrasts!
In past fashion weeks, it seemed everyone was playing it safe in basic black, but so far this season, it’s a riot of colour. Last September, I didn’t know a soul and my camera was my only friend. Thrilled to be there, taking it all in, just buzzed to be part of it: a happy spectator. There is something so intense and joyous about fashion week: it’s hard to describe. Genuine friendships form easily, quickly. The atmosphere, like the weather, is joyous and warm.
Today was about individual, personal expression. I know that some are serious fashion experts with access to all the designer clothes. But the best looks didn’t cost a fortune. It’s all done with DIY, high street, ‘oh this is my gran’s’, charity shops, and above all, an element of fun.
Maxi or mini? Both. Seventies references? Or Prada-influenced Fifties? Yes and yes. Heels or flats? Wedges? Platforms? Boots? Yes yes yes.
Case in point: my relatively new, lovely friend Jennifer, in the blue vintage top and black leather shorts. Her blog is called Style East, this is her first fashion week, and she had been stressing about what to wear. She just woke up this morning and put on what she felt like wearing that moment. She looks fabulous. And she’s having a blast. She’s me, one year ago: just a human fashion sponge. Her smile, of course, being her best accessory, after her blue eyes.
To thine own self be true. And when in doubt, wear a cool hat.
