Today was truly a gift from the gods: warm and sunny and the poppies were in bloom. This time last year, in the sunshine, it seemed we were in an old black and white film. Against the warm grey of Somerset House, everyone seemed to be in black and grey. Black is still striking, but – as predicted – we are seeing beautiful patterns and bright colour, contrasting well against tan, brown, caramel, nude, beige, camel… come to think of it, why is there just one word for black? Especially stunning is to wear all neutral but have your hair, or just lips, bright red. In the midst of this explosion of colour, offset brilliantly against the warm neutrality of the tan family, red was the star today. Warm, vibrant, true red. While it’s not my colour – I’m more black/camel/bit of hot pink, or blue/black – I can really appreciate it on women with the right colouring. The best looks for red seems to be either the most mahogany skin tones, or very pale skin. In general, blue reds are better for pale skin, while tanner or black skin is amazing with warm reds – poppy. Paired with khaki and caramel. And everyone is loving the leopard with red or, as Carine Roitfeld, editor of Paris Vogue chose, with classic red nails and bright purple heels. Perhaps it’s the jet lag type state one gets into after going to these amazing shows (it’s like running for a plane over and over). I keep thinking of that brilliant Thirties film, The Women. Written by a woman, with only women in it. And the nail polish everyone wore? JUNGLE RED.
