Yesterday we had the pleasure of attending Graduate Fashion Week at Earl’s Court in London, along with our two fabulous competition winners – Amber and Lauren, plus the lovely Ngoni from IAMNRC! Graduate Fashion Week is the world’s leading event for fashion graduates and celebrates emerging design talent.
With over 40 universities and colleges showcasing the concepts behind the collections, there was a lot to look at! So, after a much needed Burger (fashion needs fuel, right?)… we headed in to check out the graduate exhibitions. Each University had its own stand on which the graduates could display their portfolios, sketches and items they’d made! The cuts, textures and intricate detailing we saw were amazing!
After some perusing and a quick sit-down (to relieve our heeled feet), we jumped into the queue for the Best of GFW Show! The show comprised of 25 graduate collections across Womenswear, Menswear, Textile and Knitwear design and was presented by Henry Holland and Zara Martin.
Among our favourites were Manchester School of Art, who experimented with playful textures, animal motifs, python print and tinsel tassels!! Ravensbourne College wowed us with their amazing palette of canary yellow, mint and bright white and we fell in love with De Montfort’s Menswear looks comprising of metallic quilting, checks and pops of colour.
Cue girly squeal once we spotted Juwon Abiola – our Make Me the Next Model 3 winner on the catwalk! – see above left!
Later on in the evening, we headed to the Gala show where the graduates found out whether or not they’d won one of the much coveted awards, including Best Womenswear, Menswear, Textiles & Knitwear collections. Among the presenters was the gorgeous David Gandy and industry legend Hilary Alexander – who presented Suzy Menkes with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
It was a great event and one which we’ve all come away from feeling very insipred! …no doubt we’ll all be trying a few DIY jobbies on our own wardrobes…!
