We love lights, lamps, fairy lights, lampshades…all the frilly bits around getting the right atmosphere in the home. And although arguably the most important bit… light bulbs MAY seem like a boring necessity – something we have to have but that we’re a bit guilty of not paying that much attention to. Energy saving, LEDs, bayonets, bi-pins…it’s all a bit complicated for us to know the ins and outs of what makes each of these bulbs right for what purpose. So luckily, we’ve created an infographic to help out with the decision making and create the right atmosphere for your home.

Incandescent bulbs produce a warm, yellow-white light. They’re great for adding warmth and all over soft light, and perfect for ceiling lights. We use these in our lounge, hallway and bedrooms, as well as in large lamps. Reflector bulbs have an inside coating that filter the light so it shines in one direction rather than around the circumference. They’re often brighter than Incandescent bulbs and come in a wider variety of colours. We’re choosing the white reflector bulbs for use in our kitchen!

To help you decode all of the jargon, here are some quick tips to work out which is the right bulb for you – if the bulb name begins with a B, it’s a Bayonet fixing (the one with the pins!). If it begins with an E, it’s an Edison screw fixing. If it begins with PAR, it’s a specialist light fitting for a spotlight or floodlight.

Lumen means the amount of light emitted – so the more lumens, the brighter the bulb. Watt is the amount of energy required to power a bulb to its quantified brightness. The letters in a bulb name refer to the fixing, but the number refers to the size – the larger the number, the bigger the bulb. The colour is shown by the letter – so C means cool, W is warm, WW is warm white, CW is cool white, D is for daylight, IF is for Incandescent Fluorescent , N is for natural white (which is our favourite and a lovely clear pearl finish!).

To make your lightbulb-buying lives SO much easier, we’ve created a handy guide to keep you in the know and ensure you can light up your life (with the right bulb!) http://www.next.co.uk/homeware/lighting/light-bulb-guide
