Are you planning to stay on UK soil this summer? We’ve totally got your back. Holidaying abroad, whilst amazing, can be really costly and quite often, the weather in good old Blighty is just as nice! But it’s not all about the weather (honest!), staycations are the perfect opportunity to see more of the country we live in – whether it’s being a tourist in a new city, or even discovering hidden corners of those woods we drive past every day. If you’re booking a week off for some ‘me time’ (that’s the dream!) or thinking of ways to spend the holidays with your kids – we’ve come up with 6 effortless ways to do it!
Ok so we’re starting simple. Breaking away from your daily routine can really make a difference when it comes to having a staycation. Instead of prioritising getting yourself (and the kids) ready for work and school, stay in your PJs and enjoy some breakfast in bed! Breakfast tends to be the most rushed meal of the day, or even forgotten altogether – so buy some yummy new cereal or pastries and enjoy them in bed… (after you’ve uploaded a pic to instagram, obvs!). Why not go all out and treat yourself to some new cups or crockery too?
If work means sitting at a desk all day, we suggest making the most of the outdoors while you’re off! It doesn’t have to be sunny, just a few moments spent outside each day will help clear your head. Running is the best cure for an overworked mind, so if you’re up for it – lace up your trainers and start embracing your surroundings. Of course walking will do nicely too! If you’re lucky to have a garden, potting some plants is a great activity to do with the kids plus it’ll help prep your outdoor space for all the al fresco meals you’ll be enjoying when it’s warmer!
Get to know more of the UK! You may live down south where Brighton and London are within easy reach, so head north and explore places from the midlands upwards. If you drive, pack the family into the car and seek out a quirky AirBnb! Equally, if you hardly ever get to the capital, book an off-peak train ticket and wander around during the week while it’s quieter. You might even want to schedule some shopping into your trip, so here’s our store locator should the mood take you…! 😉
Want to stay closer to home? Try and find an undiscovered corner of your local woods or nature reserve! On a dry day, take a picnic with your kids and get lots of snaps for the family album! Or perhaps it’s just you and your pooch? Walk a different route each day to keep the dog walks new and interesting… Don’t forget to wear some comfy trainers – there’s nothing worse than sore feet during a reaaaaallly loooong waaaalk!
A staycation is the perfect time to become a foodie, whether it’s coming up with savoury culinary creations or really naughty (but oh-so-nice) sweet treats! During the working week, it’s hard to find time to follow complicated recipes or experiment with new ingredients – so when you’ve got time off, google some YUM meals to make. Here’s what we’ll be trying:
- Chocolate Dipped Cones (click the pic below for the full recipe)
- Sun dried tomato and orzo salad (perfect the recipe then take to work during summer!)
- No bake banoffee tarts (summer body in mind, these are a better-for-us alternative to regular banoffee!)
Last on our list of staycation activities is having a spa day in the comfort of your own home! Of course you could go to a spa – but we’re feeling thrifty. So, gather your go-to beauty remedies (we’re talking face packs, bath salts, exfoliating scrubs…) and run a steamy bath! How you unwind is up to you, we’re big fans of propping our iPad up somewhere (away from the water!) and catching up on a Netflix series. Then, once you resemble a giant raisin – do some post-bath treatments… buff your feet, clip your toe nails, moisturise, paint your nails… we could go on.
So those are our super simple ways to have the perfect staycation. If you’re already planning what you’ll get up to, let us know by leaving us a comment below… Or tweet us with the hashtag #NextStaycation.
