Striving to buck trends is a commendable pursuit. It shows creativity, originality and strength of character. Sticking out has all sorts of benefits when you’re at work, out of work, when you’re out-out, or wherever you might be. Dare to be different, because as Del Boy says on UKTV Gold, “He who dares wins, Rodney”. But in a month where both bank balance and morale are low, would it not make things easier to take a ‘softly, softly’ approach?
As much as we take ‘daring to be different’ to heart, there’s only so much of it we can really do. We’ve only got a finite amount of energy and the day only has 24 hours in which to do it. January too is a limiting factor in our capacity for boldness – we see less people, have less funds and probably have depleted zeal… If ever there’s a time to take it easy, then this is that time. Perhaps there is something to be said for picking our battles, picking the times to be ballsy and opting for a spot of light assimilation.
In that spirit we’re serving up three slices of street style that don’t shout too loudly. It’s the month muted tones are made for and quietly cool never looked so current. Besides, taking up less brain power being concerned about your conspicuousness stands you in good stead for upsetting the status quo on other fronts. You can rediscover your alter-ego in February…
