It might not feel like it now but picnic season is almost upon us so to help you prepare, we’ve put together our top tips for a perfect picnic! If you’ve not caught up with friends for a while, why not put a picnic date in everyone’s diaries? Give each person something to bring and enjoy chatting all through the afternoon over yummy treats and a cheeky tipple!
Ok so we’re setting the bar pretty high but if you’re on a mission to achieve #picnicgoals, then baked treats are a MUST. Impress your fellow picnickers with something scrummy like these insane chocolate, raspberry and roasted hazelnut oaties (check the full recipe here). Try and do your baking the day before so there’s no risk of transporting it before it’s had chance to cool!
A twist on a classic
Everyone knows sarnies are an essential part of picnicking, but rather than just cutting your crusts off – how about trying something a little more gourmet? Ciabatta is not only suuuuper tasty but it travels much better than regular sliced bread. Buy some ciabatta baguettes and fill them with whatever takes your fancy (we’re thinking of giving aubergine, prosciutto and pesto a try as per this recipe). Then slice into small rectangles to make them bitesize. Depending on how likely you are to instagram them, you could wrap each sandwich in a mini serviette and fasten with some string…! We’re guessing that depends how much prep time you’re leaving yourself…
In order to achieve picnic perfection, you need to consider your serving options. You might like to go for a fully stocked picnic hamper complete with plates, cutlery and glasses – or, show off your DIY skills with some cute cardboard ‘boats’ with wooden cutlery and napkins. Alternatively, you could scale back your operation entirely and only bring picky foods that can be transported from vessel to mouth via a crafty cocktail stick! 👍🏼
A little tipple
On a lovely summer’s day, there’s nothing better than enjoying a beer or sipping a chilled glass of rosé al fresco. It just tastes better! That said, it is absolutely essential that you’re able to keep the drinks cool during your picnic. If there’s a bunch of you (and you take picnicking very seriously) then we suggest making your very own chill box using one of those deep plastic storage containers and filling it with ice. Where transporting it is concerned, you could use a mini trailer or even a wheelbarrow for true rustic effect!
One of the best things about picnics is their leisurely nature… you can literally be sat there for HOURS eating, drinking and chatting. So given the time invested, why not boost the ambiance with some music! You and your friends could add tracks to a collaborative Spotify playlist – and even turn guessing the song name into a drinking game (for adults-only picnics, obvs).
If you live in the UK, you’ll know that no matter how hot it can get on a summer’s day – in the evening, the clear skies make way for VERY chilly temperatures! It’s easy enough to remedy though, just remember to pack some extra blankets you can all wrap up in.
